A German town has decided to display the Muslim community's prayer time on official information signs. The signs at the entrance to Penzberg in Bavaria, which list religious service times, now also include the Friday prayer time.
The yellow and purple signs that previously only showed service times for Catholic and Protestant churches now also announce the Friday prayer time for Muslims, with the addition of a blue stylized mosque symbol.
The Penzberg municipality stated on its social media account that this practice was implemented for the first time. The statement said, "Diversity unites. Good coexistence begins with openness and encounter. Our door is open to everyone, regardless of religion, origin, or worldview."
Imam Benjamin Idriz of the Penzberg Mosque said that the idea of adding the Friday prayer time to the signs came up last autumn during the annual meeting of religious communities with then-Mayor Stefan Korpan. Idriz expressed satisfaction that the practice was implemented under new Mayor Thomas Kopf.
