The direct air link between Germany and Syria, suspended for nearly 15 years, resumed with a flight by Leav Airlines from Düsseldorf to Damascus. The company plans to operate two round-trip flights a week using an Airbus A320-200 with a capacity of 180 passengers.
German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kathrin Deschauer stated in Berlin that the air transport agreement signed on July 16 forms the legal basis for these flights. Deschauer said, "This agreement enables commercial airlines to launch direct flights between Germany and Syria. It should also be seen as one of the building blocks in implementing the Germany-Syria Action Plan."
The spokesperson explained that this development follows the hosting of Syrian President Ahmed Shara in Berlin in March, during which the two countries agreed on an action plan. The air transport agreement is considered one of the concrete steps resulting from that agreement.
The resumed flights are primarily aimed at serving the Syrian community living in Germany and business travelers. This step is seen as an important milestone in the normalization process between the two countries after the civil war.
