Iraq's National Security Council held an emergency meeting after US and Saudi forces struck centres belonging to Hashd al-Shaabi. Chaired by Prime Minister Ali al-Zeidi, the meeting resulted in a decision to activate a security plan aimed at countering violations of Iraq's sovereignty and preventing potential threats to neighbouring countries.
According to a statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister's Press Office, the attacks caused the death and injury of numerous civilians and security personnel. The meeting strongly condemned these acts, and the Foreign Ministry was authorised to take necessary steps under international law and the United Nations Charter to protect Iraq's rights.
The council declared that the Iraqi government rejects all hostile acts, regardless of their justification. It stressed that the right and authority to respond to such attacks belongs solely to the Iraqi government and constitutional state institutions.
The Baghdad administration reiterated its commitment to contributing to regional stability and international peace. It stated that Iraq would continue its foreign policy based on the principles of dialogue, cooperation and good neighbourliness.
The National Security Council affirmed its determination to press ahead with the implementation of the security agreement that foresees the withdrawal of the US-led International Coalition forces from Iraq by the end of September 2026.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump claimed that the attacks were carried out in coordination with the Iraqi government. Hashd al-Shaabi announced that at least 20 of its members were killed and 30 others were injured in the strikes.
