Ghana turned the increasing hostility and attacks against foreigners in South Africa into a diplomatic issue, leading to new tension in regional relations. This intervention recalls the diplomatic crisis caused by xenophobia between Nigeria and South Africa in 2019. At that time, Nigeria boycotted the World Economic Forum held in Cape Town and recalled its ambassador. Additionally, this crisis led to increased scrutiny of South African businesses in other countries on the continent. Ghana's recent move may create broader effects on regional diplomacy and immigration policies beyond just resolving a consular dispute.
