The 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye was marked in Umayyad Square in central Damascus, where the giant screen displayed the Turkish flag and congratulatory messages for Republic Day, observed on October 29.
Aerial footage captured by Anadolu Agency showed the screen displaying the Turkish flag at night, while the square’s fountains were operating and cars continued moving around it.
That evening, Türkiye's Ambassador to Damascus Nuh Yılmaz hosted a reception marking the Republic's 103rd anniversary, attended by Syrian ministers, lawmakers, officials of the Umayyad Mosque and religious leaders. "Our Republic is the product of our nation's will that never gave up its independence, the resilience it showed in the face of the hardest trials and its centuries-old experience of statehood," Yılmaz said.
Growing ties between Ankara and Damascus
The gesture comes amid growing ties between Türkiye and Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024. Ankara has reopened its embassy in Damascus and supports efforts to promote stability and reconstruction in the country.
Turks celebrate Republic Day every year on October 29, commemorating the declaration of the republic in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, while Turkish missions around the world organize celebrations for the occasion.
