Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton called for efforts to liberate Palestine, Sudan, Syria and Congo during a press conference ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.
The Ferrari driver said, according to the official transcript of the conference issued by the International Automobile Federation: “I think we need to make sure that we are striving to liberate Congo, liberate Sudan, liberate Syria, liberate Palestine,” adding: “There is a lot of peace that I hope we can reach at some point.”
A repeated stance on Gaza
This was not the first time Hamilton had spoken out about Palestine, as he has repeatedly addressed the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. His latest remarks came while he was discussing Formula 1’s return to Africa, following the signing of a 10-year agreement to host a race in Rwanda beginning in the early 2030s.
The 41-year-old Briton said that many of the continent’s problems were still the result of colonialism and Western intervention, expressing hope that people would begin to learn more about what had happened and was happening there over the centuries.
