Iran launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Sunday targeting five Gulf Arab states and Jordan. The strikes activated air defense systems in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Jordan.
The Qatari Defense Ministry said ballistic missile attacks targeting the country were repelled. The Qatari Interior Ministry stated that three people, including a child, were injured by falling shrapnel during the interception of the Iranian attacks.
The UAE Interior Ministry announced that its air defenses responded to the missile threat. In a later statement, the Defense Ministry said that incoming missiles and drones from Iran were intercepted and that threats detected in the early morning remained outside the country's borders.
The Kuwaiti army said it engaged hostile targets in its airspace. The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry accused Iran of carrying out what it called sinful attacks and stated it reserved the right to respond.
The Bahraini Interior Ministry issued three consecutive warnings, saying sirens sounded and that hostile attacks were underway. According to the official news agency, Bahrain was subjected to Iran's sinful attacks.
Oman's Information Ministry said areas in the Musandam governorate overlooking the Strait of Hormuz were targeted by drones. While no accusation was made about who carried out the attack, the Omani authorities condemned the targeting.
According to Jordan's official news agency, three missiles launched from Iranian territory early Sunday struck various points inside the kingdom. No casualties were reported, with damage limited to minor material losses.
Strait of Hormuz Closed and Retaliatory Strikes
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards declared that the Strait of Hormuz would be closed to maritime traffic until further notice. The statement said two ships were targeted for allegedly violating Iranian transit rules.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it had launched a new wave of strikes against Iran in retaliation for the targeting of commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM said around 140 military sites were hit overnight, including missiles, drones and naval assets.
Iran, for its part, reported that positions belonging to US forces in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan were hit by missiles. Iranian state television said explosions were heard in the cities of Assaluyeh, Bandar Abbas, Sirik and Chabahar around the Strait of Hormuz.
The Revolutionary Guards navy stated that the strait was closed due to security instability caused by foreign intervention. Tensions in the region escalated after the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28, 2026.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that Iran had requested a resumption of negotiations and that Washington had agreed, while also declaring that the ceasefire had ended. A memorandum of understanding was signed last June through Qatari and Pakistani mediation, but Trump said the recent escalation had rendered that document void.
