Iran rejected the US ceasefire proposal that came through Iraq to halt the military escalation between Washington and Tehran. According to the New York Times, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaydi conveyed the proposal after meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House and then traveling to Tehran.
However, Iranian officials stated that the proposal did not meet Tehran's expectations regarding the future control of the Strait of Hormuz. It was reported that al-Zaydi met in Tehran with President Masoud Pezeshkian, chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said the problem is not due to a lack of mediators, but from the US's "irrational and hegemonic perspective."
Military escalation continues in the region
As the US intensified its attacks on infrastructure targets such as Iranian military bases, airports, bridges, and ports, Iran retaliated with ballistic missiles and drones against several countries in the region.
Iranian officials speaking to the newspaper said that if Trump carries out his threats to strike Tehran and vital facilities, the armed forces are ready for the expansion of the war. The officials stated that in that case, Iran would widen the scope of the conflict, including targeting Tel Aviv and demanding the closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait through the Houthis.
