Iran’s United Nations Ambassador Saeed Iravani stated that lasting peace and security in the Middle East can only be achieved by ending occupation, stopping aggression, and strengthening regional dialogue.
Iravani spoke at the open session of the United Nations Security Council on June 10 in New York, which focused on developing political solutions through mediation and dialogue in the Middle East.
Emphasis on Sovereignty and International Law
The Iranian diplomat stressed that regional stability must be based on respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, and cooperation among regional countries. He argued that security cannot be ensured without addressing the root causes of tensions in the region.
Iravani identified the ongoing occupation of Palestinian, Lebanese, and Syrian territories, the attacks carried out by the Israeli regime in the region, and the prolonged US military presence as the main causes of conflict and insecurity.
He stated that as long as occupation and aggression continue, resistance will also persist, and no political or diplomatic process can legitimize occupation or aggression.
The diplomat emphasized that lasting peace, stability, and collective security depend on ending occupation, respecting territorial integrity, holding attackers accountable, and applying international law without double standards.
Regional Security and Criticism of Foreign Intervention
Iravani said recent developments and the ongoing foreign military presence in the Persian Gulf have once again shown that they do not bring lasting security.
He noted that lasting security can only be achieved through dialogue, cooperation, and confidence-building measures among regional countries, based on equal sovereignty, good neighborliness, and full compliance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
Ceasefire Violations and Defense of Legitimate Self-Defense
The Iranian ambassador alleged that the US and Israeli regime repeatedly violated the comprehensive ceasefire declared on April 8. In response to these violations and armed attacks, Iran has exercised and will continue to exercise its right to legitimate self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Iravani stressed Iran’s determination to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, national security, and people. He described the US and Israeli regime as the aggressors and stated they will be held responsible for all consequences and any potential escalation.
Message Against Negotiations Under Threats
Addressing the negotiation process, Iravani said a sustainable agreement cannot be reached through threats, intimidation, or use of force. He called on the US President to cease his threats.
Iravani stated that Iran has never negotiated under threats or pressure and urged Washington to abandon threatening language and engage with Iran on the basis of equal sovereignty and mutual respect if it truly seeks a diplomatic solution.
The speech was delivered at a time when occupation, foreign military presence, and regional dialogue have once again become central issues in the Middle East security equation.
