Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian departed from Tehran for Islamabad on Tuesday at the head of a high-level delegation. The visit is taking place at the invitation of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Upon his arrival at Islamabad's airport, Pezeshkian was welcomed by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Background of the visit
Before departing for Islamabad, President Pezeshkian stated that this visit was shaped following intense efforts by Pakistani officials to coordinate and finalize the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.
Pezeshkian said, "The process followed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, General Asim Munir, the Army Chief, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and the Pakistani government in defending the rights of the Iranian nation played an indispensable role in finalizing the agreement."
The Iranian President appreciated the efforts of Pakistani officials to establish peace in the region, adding, "The effort shown by these esteemed individuals was such that perhaps their concern for reaching an agreement and establishing peace in the region was greater than ours."
Meeting agenda
During his one-day visit, Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold separate meetings with Pakistani officials and exchange views on the most urgent issues concerning the two countries.
