Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that the bodies of 5 Iranian Revolutionary Guard members killed in joint US-Saudi airstrikes in Iraq were brought to the country. The bodies entered through the Mehran border crossing in Iran's western Ilam province.
It was stated that at least 20 militants were killed in the attacks carried out on Wednesday. The US and Saudi Arabia stated that the operation targeted Iran-backed militants in Iraq in response to recent drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities.
The attacks struck positions belonging to the Hashd al-Shaabi coalition in Iraq. This coalition includes powerful pro-Iran groups. The deceased are believed to have been linked to the Revolutionary Guard's Quds Force, which conducts Iran's overseas military operations.
Iraqi government spokesman Haydar al-Abudi said on Thursday that the country had "no knowledge" of the attacks and "does not approve of any attack on specific areas or groups in Iraq." Al-Abudi also announced that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's planned visit to Riyadh had been suspended. The decision came after Saudi Arabia accused Iran-backed groups of launching drones targeting Saudi oil facilities.
The operation took place amid increasing US pressure to disarm Iran-backed armed groups that have been attacking US facilities in Iraq and other targets in the region.
