Iraq has officially expressed its desire to join the BRICS group, which brings together the world's leading emerging economies.
Iraq's Ambassador to Moscow Abdul-Karim Hashim Mostafa said in a statement to Russian news agency TASS, "BRICS is a very important organization, and I hope Iraq will become part of this organization one day."
Ambassador Mostafa noted that Iraq's possible membership "depends on many things," adding, "It depends on how the organization is structured, what the conditions for joining BRICS are. But it will certainly be a good idea."
BRICS was founded in 2006 on Russia's initiative. Brazil, Russia, India and China were among the founding members. The group took the name BRICS with the accession of South Africa in 2011.
At its first summit held in Yekaterinburg in June 2009, the organization set the goal of establishing consistent, active, pragmatic and open dialogue and cooperation among member countries. It later adopted principles of non-alignment and non-direction against third parties.
Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia joined BRICS as full members in January 2024, while Indonesia joined in January 2025.
