The Israeli army launched artillery strikes on southern Lebanon despite the ongoing ceasefire and diplomatic agreements. According to Lebanon's official National News Agency (NNA), the outskirts of the towns of Talusa and Merkaba in the Nabatieh Governorate were targeted with artillery fire.
Following the strikes, a fire broke out in the targeted area. Explosive attacks targeted residential areas in the town of Merkaba, with successive blasts heard and thick smoke billowing.
Ceasefire Violations and the Course of Negotiations
The Israeli army launched heavy airstrikes on Lebanon on March 2, occupying several towns in the south. The Lebanese government announced that the number of internally displaced people had exceeded 1 million.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on April 24 that the 10-day temporary ceasefire that took effect on April 17 would be extended for another three weeks. Subsequently, following a third round of U.S.-mediated talks held on May 14-15, it was agreed to extend the ceasefire for 45 days starting May 17. After a fifth round of direct negotiations in Washington, a framework agreement was signed between Lebanon and Israel on June 26.
Despite all these diplomatic efforts, the Israeli army's attacks continued. The attack also came despite a U.S.-Iran understanding that reportedly included Lebanon.
According to the latest figures from the Lebanese Health Ministry, 4,332 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since March 2.
