Numerous settlements in southern Lebanon were targeted in attacks carried out on Sunday morning. Despite the framework agreement signed in June and brokered by the United States, the Israeli army carried out airstrikes, artillery fire and machine-gun attacks on areas in the districts of Tyre, Nabatieh, Marjayoun and Bint Jbeil.
The areas targeted included Mansouri, Wadi Zibqin, Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Kfar Tibnit, Mayfadoun, Kafr Rumman, Mazraat al-Shoumiriyah, al-Qusayr, Beit Yahoun, Safarin and Hadatha.
Numerous settlements targeted in southern Lebanon
Several homes were destroyed in Mansouri in the Tyre district. Wadi Zibqin came under artillery and heavy machine-gun fire. Nabatieh al-Fawqa was hit by airstrikes twice overnight, while the area around Kfar Tibnit and Mayfadoun was also bombed. One of the attacks on Mayfadoun completely destroyed a home.
The Doha Kafr Rumman area was targeted by artillery fire. In the Marjayoun district, the area around Mazraat al-Shoumiriyah and the town of al-Qusayr were bombed.
In the Bint Jbeil district, Israeli forces opened machine-gun fire toward Beit Yahoun and Safarin. After an Israeli tank fired four shells at Hadatha, the forces advanced toward the center of the town, where a fire broke out.
Israeli army gives reason for attacks
In a statement posted on X, the Israeli army said the attacks were carried out in response to what it alleged was an explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicle sent toward its forces on Saturday. The statement described the area targeted in the attack as a “security belt.”
Lebanese authorities said that Israel had been conducting military operations in the country since March 2. At least 4,386 people have been killed, 12,407 injured and more than 1 million displaced in these operations.
The attacks took place after the framework agreement was signed in June. The agreement provides for Israel’s gradual withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories in exchange for the deployment of the Lebanese army and the disarmament of Hezbollah.
