British trip-hop group Massive Attack member Robert Del Naja was detained under counterterrorism laws while taking part in a Gaza solidarity demonstration in Liverpool.
The placard carried by Del Naja read: "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action." The protest also called for the United Kingdom to lift its ban on Palestine Action and end arms supplies to Israel.
Challenge to the ban on Palestine Action
The protest, organised by Defend Our Juries, was held as part of the group's "Lift the Ban" campaign. The campaign seeks to reverse the decision to add Palestine Action to the United Kingdom's list of proscribed terrorist organisations.
The demonstration in Liverpool took place before the Labour Party's annual conference. Palestine Action supporters and campaigners opposed to the British government's policy towards Israel and Gaza took part in the protest.

Message released from Del Naja
Following the detention, a pre-recorded video message addressed to Prime Minister Andy Burnham by human rights lawyer Michael Mansfield and Palestine Action co-founder Huda Amoori was released.
The message referred to hundreds of people detained for supporting Palestine Action and said: "We do not believe that you think these citizens are terrorists. We therefore ask you to stop what is clearly wrong and remove Palestine Action from the list of proscribed organisations."
Casualties in Gaza and legal proceedings
About 74,000 Palestinians have been killed, more than 175,000 injured and approximately 90 percent of the infrastructure in Gaza destroyed in the war since 2023.
Despite the ceasefire that took effect on 10 October 2025, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed and about 5,000 injured in the attacks that have continued in Gaza.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
