Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir visited military units in southern Lebanon and delivered a clear message that operations in the region will continue. Addressing the soldiers, Zamir said, "The war is not over yet," and stressed that the Israeli army will not withdraw from any area it has taken control of until long-term security is guaranteed.
According to a statement from the Israeli army, Zamir conducted field inspections together with Northern Command chief Major General Ravi Milo and 91st Division commander Brigadier General Yuval Gaz. During the visit, he met with commanders and soldiers of the "Kfir" (900) Brigade, which began its first ground maneuver in Lebanon last week after a long deployment in Gaza.
The Israeli Chief of Staff said, "We have taken control of areas in Lebanon and continue to clear them of terrorist infrastructure." Zamir added, "If necessary, we will expand the scope of our operations to include additional areas. We are acting with a clear security concept based on forward defense positions deep in enemy territory on all fronts that pose a direct threat."
Clear contradiction with agreement terms
Zamir's statements directly contradict the terms of the "framework formula" agreement signed between Lebanon and Israel on June 26 under US mediation. The agreement stipulated a gradual Israeli withdrawal from areas in southern Lebanon and the deployment of the Lebanese army in those areas. As part of the deal, the Lebanese army began deploying on July 21 in the town of Western Zawtar, one of the first-phase pilot areas.
However, on Wednesday the Israeli army continued violations, detonations and demolition activities at various points in southern Lebanon. Israel still maintains a presence in southern Lebanon, including areas it has held for decades as well as territory it controls after advancing more than 10 kilometers during the 2023-2024 war and recent operations.
According to Lebanese Health Ministry data, Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2 have killed 4,332 people and wounded 12,236. There has been no official statement from the Lebanese side regarding Zamir's remarks.
