Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on the capital Kyiv just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of a major attack. The assault, which took place in the early hours of Thursday morning, caused multiple explosions across the city.
Ukraine's Air Force announced that Russia targeted the capital with ballistic missiles. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to take shelter after the explosions. In a later statement, Klitschko said that fires broke out in some non-residential buildings as a result of the attacks, but according to initial reports, there were no casualties.
Zelenskyy's warning and call to the US
Hours before the attack, Zelenskyy wrote on X that Russia had been preparing a major attack "a few days ago" and that the likelihood of it being carried out overnight was "high." The Ukrainian leader said, "It is important that our partners fully understand what is happening and know that the protection of lives depends directly on whether they are ready to help us with air defense missiles."
In his statement, Zelenskyy specifically addressed the US and other partners that possess Patriot missiles. US President Donald Trump recently announced at the NATO summit in Turkey that Ukraine would be granted a license to produce Patriot air defense systems. Zelenskyy said, "This primarily concerns the US and partners who have Patriot missiles and can provide them to support our defense."
