Israeli media reported that the Tel Aviv government is weighing additional military options against Lebanon. The reports surfaced at a time when Israel carries out airstrikes on Lebanese territory almost daily.
Israeli state television Kan, citing unnamed sources, reported that Israel's response to Hezbollah's violations is not yet over and that additional options, including precision operations, are being discussed. The same sources claimed that Lebanon is trying to use the Rome negotiations to reduce Israel's reaction and that the Beirut government is counting on US President Donald Trump's desire for the talks to succeed.
Israel's private channel Channel 13 announced that the army is preparing for further escalation and has prepared options for new strikes on targets in southern Lebanon. The channel noted that this preparation came after the targeting of six points allegedly belonging to Hezbollah, and highlighted Israel's frustration with the Lebanese army's failure to act against Hezbollah.
Channel 12 also reported that the Israeli army conveyed to the political level the message that a 'more determined and stronger' response against Lebanon is needed.
These reports came to the fore after a bombing targeting an Israeli force in the Majdal Zun area of southern Lebanon on Wednesday. Israeli media wrote that Israeli soldiers were killed and wounded in the explosion, and that four seriously wounded were evacuated by helicopter to hospital. The Israeli army did not issue an official statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, in Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Wednesday, one Lebanese citizen was killed and 12 injured in the town of Tibnin. Lebanon's official news agency announced that families in the town of Mansouri also fled their homes after an Israeli evacuation warning.
These developments on the ground came as the second day of indirect negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Rome, mediated by the US, concluded. The talks are scheduled to continue until Thursday.
The negotiations are continuing despite Israel's ongoing violations in Lebanon. On June 26, the parties signed a framework formula that envisages Israel's gradual withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army.
