The ambassadors of Lebanon and Israel to Washington are expected to meet in the U.S. capital on Tuesday in an effort to revive negotiations between the two countries.
A Lebanese official source said the meeting would address the latest developments in Lebanon and how to implement the framework agreed in June. Lebanon’s ambassador to Washington, Nada Mouawad, and Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Yehiel Leiter, are expected to attend.
Rome round postponed until October
The planned meeting in Washington comes after the Lebanon-Israel negotiating round scheduled to take place in Rome, the capital of Italy, this week was postponed until October. The meeting is intended to assess recent developments and advance implementation of the framework agreement.
Beirut’s priorities
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that a new round of negotiations would not take place at the current stage. Aoun listed the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, the return of detainees and displaced people, and reconstruction among his country’s national priorities.
Negotiation process begins in Washington
Direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel began with a meeting held in Washington under U.S. mediation on April 14, 2026. The sides discussed a ceasefire, withdrawal, borders, detainees and missing persons.
The two countries reached a framework agreement in Washington on June 26 under U.S. auspices. The agreement provides for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army in the areas vacated.
The seventh round, held in Rome from August 4 to 6, addressed military, political, legal and border-related files, as well as detainees and missing persons.
Situation in southern Lebanon
Despite the framework agreement, Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon have continued, while Israel retains control of several positions in the area. Some of these positions have been under control for a long time, while others were seized during recent wars and military operations.
