The National Museum in Beirut hosted a ceremony marking the handover of cultural heritage between Lebanon and Egypt. Lebanon handed Egypt 37 ancient artifacts that had been smuggled into the country.
Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salamé said the Pharaonic-era artifacts were seized at Beirut port in 2020. Salamé handed the artifacts to Egyptian Ambassador to Beirut Alaa Moussa.
Salamé said the handover was carried out under a 1970 international convention on preventing the illicit trafficking of cultural property. He called on those illegally holding Lebanese cultural property to return the artifacts.
Moussa thanked the Lebanese authorities for their efforts to return the artifacts to Egypt. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation in protecting cultural heritage.
The items handed over to Egypt included two wooden coffins with colorful decorations, masks, wooden dolls, Coptic textile fragments and medium-sized statues.
