Lebanese Justice Minister Adel Nassar rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to assign Israel's fight against Hezbollah to Syria. Nassar stated that the issue of disarmament is an internal matter for Lebanon.
Nassar expressed opposition to handing over this responsibility to foreign powers, noting that Lebanon has suffered from foreign interventions for many years. The minister emphasized that the authority to make decisions on security matters should belong to the state.
Trump's Statements at the G7
During the G7 Summit held in France, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Israel's approach to Lebanon and Hezbollah. He argued that Israel needs to "finish the job faster."
Trump also mentioned that he proposed assigning the Hezbollah issue to Syria. He said that the person governing Syria is supported by himself, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and some others, and that this person has done an "extraordinary" job in reorganizing the country.
Trump argued that completely demolishing a civilian apartment building was not right, pointing out that many civilians live in those buildings. He also criticized Israel's attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut on June 14.
Casualties in the Beirut Attack
The Israeli army carried out an airstrike targeting a residential apartment in the southern suburbs of Beirut on June 14, 2026. The attack was claimed to be aimed at Hezbollah targets.
Three people died in the attack. Among the deceased were two women, and 16 people were injured, including four women.
Trump said he did not find it appropriate that the attack occurred shortly before an agreement was announced between the U.S. and Iran. He stated that he clearly conveyed this to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Agreement Between Washington and Tehran
Washington and Tehran announced on Sunday evening that they had reached an agreement mediated by Pakistan. The agreement reportedly includes ending military operations on various fronts, including Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the naval blockade on Iran.
The agreement is expected to be signed on Friday in Switzerland. This development has reignited debate on the Lebanon front.
Casualty Toll on the Lebanon Front
Israel has continued its large-scale attacks on Lebanon since March 2. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, these attacks have resulted in 3,884 deaths, 11,856 injuries, and over one million displaced people.
It is noted that Israel continues to occupy some areas in southern Lebanon, some of which has lasted for decades, while others expanded again after the 2023-2024 war. With the recent attacks, Israeli forces' advance into Lebanese territory has exceeded 10 kilometers.
