Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Libya’s unity and stability are important for regional security and reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for these goals at an international meeting held in New York.
The meeting, titled “International Support for Peace, Unity and Prosperity in Libya,” was held on Thursday as part of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Officials from Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Qatar, Egypt and Saudi Arabia also attended.
Libya’s political process and security
The meeting’s agenda included the United Nations-led political process, as well as Libya’s economic prosperity and security issues. Fidan said Türkiye would continue to make an active contribution to efforts in these areas.
Fidan also referred to his visit to Libya on August 11-12 and his meetings in Tripoli and Benghazi.
Call for a unified government
Fidan said Türkiye would continue supporting efforts to establish a unified government in line with its “One Libya” policy. He added that international partners should engage in dialogue with all sides and actors in Libya without discrimination.
Fidan called for support for a political process led and owned by Libyans. He said Türkiye was providing capacity-building support for efforts to unify and strengthen Libya’s economic and security institutions.
Fidan also said Türkiye was ready to play a key role in the coming period in areas where Libya needs support, including development and security.
