South Sudan-born NBA player Wenyen Gabriel returned to the land he fled as a child with his family to open a basketball court in a refugee camp. At the event held in Doro Refugee Camp, young people from the camp and children from surrounding host communities were introduced to basketball.
Noting that some children were playing basketball for the first time, Gabriel said, "It was truly indescribable happiness. Seeing them have fun together and share this sport that I love so much was a very special experience for me."
The NBA player underscored that the people of South Sudan have urgent needs such as food, shelter and clean water, adding, "People who have endured so many hardships need a space where they can come together as a community and spend time together."
