Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu wants to meet with opposition leader Lapid to secure more funding for the army.
Arutz Sheva reported that Netanyahu will try to persuade Lapid to agree to reconsider the budget bill for this purpose. Deputy Chief of Staff Tamir Yadai is also expected to attend the meeting, which is scheduled to take place during the day.
Lapid defends existing resources
Lapid previously did not respond positively to Netanyahu’s request for a meeting and argued that the funds needed by the army should be provided from the existing budget.
Israel’s public broadcaster KAN previously reported that the army’s financial problems were adversely affecting operations targeting the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Lebanon.
Netanyahu wants the budget increased
Israel’s defense budget for 2026 was set at approximately 143 billion shekels, or $47.3 billion. Netanyahu wants the budget increased to 183 billion shekels, or $60.6 billion, following attacks targeting Iran and Lebanon.
Israel’s prime minister is required to brief the opposition leader at least once a month on developments in the security sphere.
