The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note rose to 5.011% on Monday as a sharp increase in oil prices intensified inflation concerns. The yield thus moved above the 5% level for the first time since October 2023.
Oil prices climbed more than 4.5% on the same day, approaching $110 a barrel. Tensions between the United States and Iran, along with concerns about possible disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, contributed to the rise in markets.
While investors monitored the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision and expectations for rate hikes, claims that the Houthis had advanced toward areas around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait along Yemen's western coast heightened concerns about maritime transport and oil supplies.
The talks between the United States and Iran appear to have stalled over disputes concerning maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The United States is alleged to have carried out attacks on some military targets in Iran, while Tehran reportedly responded with attacks on U.S. military facilities in some Arab countries.
It was also alleged that the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28 and that more than 3,000 people had been killed, according to Iranian authorities.
