Palestinian prisoner Imad Rajih Sarhan passed away after 25 years in Israel's Gilboa Prison in the north. Palestinian prisoner rights organizations announced that 47-year-old Sarhan died in prison on Sunday.
Israeli authorities cited a heart attack as the cause of death. However, officials did not provide details about the circumstances of Sarhan's death or his health condition prior to his passing.
Imprisoned since 2001
Sarhan was from the northern Israeli city of Haifa and had been serving a life sentence since October 15, 2001.
Palestinian organizations stated that Sarhan endured severe and prolonged interrogations in his early years, which left lasting health effects on his body. The same statement claimed that systematic medical neglect occurred during his imprisonment, leading to the development of heart and vascular diseases.
Figures shared by Palestinian organizations
With Sarhan's death, Palestinian organizations reported that the number of Palestinian prisoners who have died under Israeli custody since October 2023 has risen to 90. The statement also noted that since 1967, the number of prisoners who died in the West Bank under Israeli occupation has reached 327.
The organizations further claimed that approximately 9,500 Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli prisons, facing conditions such as hunger, torture, and medical neglect.
This development has reignited discussions about the conditions of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
