Speaking at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that opposing unilateral sanctions was a priority for BRICS countries and independent states.
Pezeshkian said serious and practical steps were needed to counter unilateral and inhumane sanctions that target countries’ development, children, patients’ health and the welfare of societies. He also drew attention to the sanctions imposed on Iran by the United States.
Emphasis on sovereignty for security
Pezeshkian said long-term security in the region depended on states mutually respecting one another’s sovereignty, adding that the notion that one country’s security could be ensured at the expense of the security of other countries must be rejected.
The Iranian president also said that no state should allow its territory to be used for attacks against neighboring countries.
Call to oppose attacks on civilian areas
Pezeshkian called on BRICS to adopt a clear position against the normalization of attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities. He said such actions threatened international peace and security.
Pezeshkian said Iran supported strengthening political coordination within BRICS and in line with the United Nations Charter, and said economic relations should be developed.
Pezeshkian also called for expanded cooperation in science, technology, energy and food security, with this cooperation pursued in line with the interests of the countries of the Global South.
