Qatar stated that compliance with the memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran is necessary to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani held separate phone calls with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
According to statements from the Qatari Foreign Ministry, the calls discussed diplomatic efforts to strengthen security and stability in the region. Al Thani emphasized that all parties must remain committed to dialogue and diplomacy, and highlighted the importance of implementing the memorandum of understanding reached between the US and Iran.
The memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran on June 18 included provisions such as ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, ending hostilities on all fronts including Lebanon, and lifting the US naval blockade on Iran. However, as negotiations for a final agreement continued, a dispute arose over navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Between July 8 and 24, the US launched attacks on Iran. Iran, for its part, stated it targeted US military facilities and equipment in Arab countries, primarily Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait.
Al Thani stressed the importance of implementing the memorandum of understanding, including guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, to preserve regional security. He also reiterated his full support for all efforts aimed at de-escalation and achieving a comprehensive agreement that would ensure sustainable peace in the region.
US President Donald Trump said in a statement on Sunday that Iran and other countries in the Middle East had requested time to finalize an agreement ensuring the immediate, complete and comprehensive reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the elimination of Iran's nuclear threat. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, 'At this request, and for the future interest of the world and for Iran to remain successful and prosperous, I agreed to cancel the attack on the condition of a rapid agreement.'
Trump also warned that the US is fully prepared to act against Iran. Earlier on Friday, he stated that Washington would 'strike very hard until Iran says it cannot endure.'
On the other hand, Iranian media announced on Sunday that reports of an agreement reached with Washington to open the Strait of Hormuz to ship traffic were not true. Iranian press, including the Fars news agency, denied the claims.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran. Tehran stated that more than 3,000 people lost their lives in these attacks, and claimed that American and Israeli soldiers were killed in Iran's retaliatory strikes.
