Deir ez-Zor International Airport in eastern Syria received its first flight from Kuwait City by Kuwait-based Jazeera Airways on Saturday. The flight launched direct and regular service between Kuwait and Deir ez-Zor.
Before the new route opened, the airport’s operational readiness and necessary services were assessed. A delegation of Kuwaiti officials and Jazeera Airways representatives visited Deir ez-Zor Airport in July to inspect its infrastructure, technical equipment and operational services.
The July inspection was conducted to review the airport’s readiness and complete the necessary procedures for the resumption of direct flights between the two cities.
Deir ez-Zor Airport returns to civilian flights
The first civilian test flight to Deir ez-Zor Airport took place in February 2025, after a 13-year hiatus. The airport had been converted into a military barracks during the war in Syria between 2011 and 2024.
As air travel in Syria began to recover, the number of airlines operating flights to the country or resuming their services had risen to 12 by June.
Syria’s air transport sector had declined sharply from 2012 onward because of security conditions and risks affecting its airspace.
