Russia's Ambassador to Tehran Alexey Dedov announced that economic and trade cooperation between Moscow and Tehran continues to grow actively despite the US-Israel war and ongoing regional tensions.
In an exclusive interview with Tehran Times, Dedov noted that according to 2025 statistics, the bilateral trade volume increased by 21 percent compared to the previous year, reaching approximately $5.8 billion.
21 percent increase in trade
The Russian ambassador stated that in the January-April period of 2026, despite disruptions in some logistics chains, a moderate growth of 2 percent was recorded in the bilateral trade volume. He emphasized that the full implementation of the Eurasian Economic Union-Iran Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force on May 15, 2025, played a significant role in this growth.
Dedov said that in the first year of the agreement, the trade volume between Iran and the Eurasian Union member countries increased by 15 percent, and this mechanism provides preferential conditions for approximately 87 percent of traded goods. According to official statistics from the Iranian side, the trade value between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union countries reached approximately $7.3 billion in the March 2025-March 2026 period, an increase of 22 percent.
Record increase on the North-South Corridor
The ambassador stated that the process of increasing the use of the North-South International Transport Corridor continues, noting that in the first four months of 2026, Russian exports of goods to Iran increased by more than 56 percent, and the total cargo volume transported along this route reached approximately 2.2 million tons, an increase of 87 percent.
Dedov also noted that the completion of internal procedures in Iran for the May 2023 intergovernmental agreement on the mutual recognition of Authorized Economic Operators will give momentum to trade relations.
Cooperation in infrastructure and nuclear projects
Stating that Russia is ready to help rebuild Iran's war-damaged infrastructure, Dedov said that if an official request comes, they will begin evaluating proposals as soon as possible.
Referring to nuclear cooperation, the ambassador said that when personnel safety and nuclear security conditions are met, Rosatom experts are ready to fully return to Iran to continue the construction of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
Rasht-Astara railway and Hormuz power plant
Dedov reported that the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway is ongoing, with technical surveys and hydrometeorological studies continuing. Regarding the Hormuz nuclear power plant, he announced that Russian and Iranian companies are continuing consultations on the contract framework and that a face-to-face meeting will be held in Moscow at the end of June or the beginning of July.
Stating that Rosatom continues negotiations with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran on small-scale nuclear power plant projects, Dedov added that the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, is always welcome in Russia.
Strait of Hormuz crossings
Regarding statements that more favorable conditions would be provided for Russian ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the Russian ambassador said that for now, under the Islamabad Agreement, the passage of commercial vessels from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and vice versa is free for 60 days, and the mechanism and transit conditions after this period are still in the draft stage.
