Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said “the illegal, unjust and unjustified war in Iran has cost EU member states more than 100 billion euros,” warning that rising energy prices are weighing on European households.
Sánchez made the remarks at the European Council summit in Brussels on Oct. 15-16, where high energy prices top the agenda. There is no independent EU estimate confirming the figure he cited.

Leaders discuss energy prices
European Council President António Costa said “targeted and temporary measures are essential to ease the burden and reduce price volatility,” while EU sources said leaders backed the short-term measures proposed by the European Commission.
Sánchez also criticized the Irish presidency’s draft 2028-2034 EU budget as “clearly insufficient,” saying it is “neither acceptable nor feasible for the Spanish government.” The draft cuts funding to 1,620 billion euros from the 1,760 billion proposed by the Commission.
Among the war’s fiercest critics
Sánchez is among the European leaders most critical of the war in Iran. In March he said it was far worse than the 2003 Iraq war, and his government approved a 5-billion-euro package to cushion its impact on energy prices.
