Mecca Defense Partnership
The chiefs of staff of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan condemned attacks targeting Mecca and civilian and economic facilities at a meeting in Riyadh on Friday. The talks addressed the development of military and intelligence cooperation and the integration of defense capabilities.
The three countries signed the Mecca Defense Partnership Agreement on August 7. Under the agreement, an armed attack against one of the parties is considered an attack against all parties, with the aim of strengthening joint deterrence and defense cooperation.
Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia
In July, the Houthis announced what they described as a “naval blockade” against Saudi Arabia. Following the group’s announcement, the attacks increased in September. The Houthis later claimed responsibility for attacks on locations in Saudi Arabia and ships using ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Saudi Arabia has led a coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government since March 2015. The Houthis have controlled Sanaa and some provinces of Yemen since September 2014.
