As the military escalation in the Middle East continued, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Italy, Kuwait, Egypt, Iran and Oman held three separate phone calls. The discussions, held on Wednesday, focused on developments in Yemen, attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and the security of maritime traffic.
The diplomatic contacts also addressed regional issues and efforts to strengthen security and stability. Efforts to protect the safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are intended to support the flow of international trade and regional stability.

During a phone call between Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the ministers discussed Houthi attacks targeting areas in Riyadh.
Tajani condemned the attacks and said that Italy stood in solidarity with Saudi Arabia and attached importance to the country’s security. The Italian foreign minister also thanked the Saudi authorities for their efforts to ensure the safety of Italian citizens living in Saudi Arabia.

The two ministers also discussed regional and international developments, as well as efforts to ensure the security and freedom of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The ministers assessed regional issues alongside Yemen and discussed the steps needed to establish peace and stability in the region.
Toll of attacks in Saudi Arabia
The diplomatic talks took place as the military escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen continued. In recent days, airports and critical facilities in Saudi Arabia have been targeted by missile and drone attacks.
According to official Saudi figures, 10 attacks were carried out against five airports across the country between October 5 and 11. The attacks killed 20 people and injured hundreds, caused property damage and disrupted air travel.

King Khalid International Airport in the capital Riyadh was the most frequently targeted airport, with five attacks. Operations at the airport were temporarily suspended after the attacks.
Yemen Dawn operation enters its tenth day
The military operation called “Yemen Dawn” entered its tenth day. Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, said the operation aimed to restore state institutions and establish control over the capital, Sanaa.
The current military escalation is viewed as part of the tensions that began and intensified in July, following a relatively calm period after the ceasefire that started in Yemen in April 2022.
Saudi Arabia has led the military coalition supporting the Yemeni government since March 2015. The Houthis have controlled the capital, Sanaa, and some of the country’s provinces since September 2014.
