Syrian authorities announced the completion of operations targeting an ISIS cell that began in Raqqa in the country’s northeast and spread to the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib and Homs. Explosive materials prepared for use in attacks were seized during the security operations.
The operations were carried out in coordination with the General Intelligence Service and internal security forces. Security forces monitored the movements of the cell members, detained four leaders in Raqqa and captured the other members in operations conducted across the three provinces.
Cell linked to five abduction cases
According to the initial investigation findings, the cell members were involved in five abduction cases, assassinations and the placement of explosive devices.
Syrian authorities also announced in July that several ISIS cells had been dismantled in the south of the country and that Firas al-Daghir, one of the group’s senior figures, had been detained.
The Interior Ministry said 235 ISIS members had been detained over a three-month period and that seven attacks planned by the group had been thwarted.
