Muhammad al-Jafal, an adviser to the Syrian Foreign Ministry for African and Asian Affairs, said Syria’s sovereignty must be respected for relations with Iran to be restored. He also called on Tehran to review its past policies and build trust.
Damascus’s message to Iran
Al-Jafal said Syria’s policy toward Iran was not a temporary political position. He said it stemmed from 14 years of war, killings, forced displacement and destruction.
Al-Jafal argued that Iran’s support for the government of Bashar al-Assad had harmed the Syrian people, saying the backing had deepened the crisis and increased Syrians’ suffering.
Al-Jafal said Islam was not limited to political slogans, adding that justice, fairness, rejection of oppression and respect for human dignity formed the foundation of Islamic values.
Emphasis on sovereignty and equality
Al-Jafal said Syria pursued an open policy with all countries, stressing that past events could not be ignored. He said that if Iran wanted to establish a new relationship with Syria, it must respect Damascus’s sovereignty and the will of the Syrian people, reassess its previous policies and build trust.
Al-Jafal stressed that Syria was not within any country’s sphere of influence. He said foreign relations would be conducted on the basis of mutual respect, national interests and equality.
Al-Jafal said Syria did not want hostility or dependence on any country, adding that it sought balanced relations with countries that respected its sovereignty and the choices of its people.
Pezeşkiyan’s statement on Syria
Iranian President Masoud Pezeşkiyan had said that Iran had so far been unable to establish relations with Syria’s new administration. Pezeşkiyan said this was linked to the impression created in Syria and expressed hope that Damascus would act on the basis of Islam, religion, justice and fairness.
Following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, 2024, Iran-Syria relations deteriorated to an unprecedented extent. The two sides held no direct meeting or telephone call after that date.
Assessments in Syria describe Iran as one of the main supporters of the Assad government. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also visited Syria days before the government was overthrown and was among the last officials to meet with Bashar al-Assad.
