Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani made notable remarks about rising tensions in the region following Israel’s recent attacks on Syrian territory.
Al-Shaibani said Israel was trying to prevent Syria from restoring its stability, stressing that the Syrian government’s primary goal after many years of war was to rebuild the country and achieve security and stability.
Al-Shaibani said:
“We want to rebuild the country and achieve stability in Syria and the region. We do not want to go to war with Israel, and we want Israel to stop its aggression against Syria.”
The Syrian foreign minister made the remarks amid rising tensions following Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur air base in northwestern Syria on August 18.
Israel targeted the Abu al-Duhur air base
Israeli warplanes carried out a series of strikes on the Abu al-Duhur air base, damaging the runway and areas inside the base. No deaths were announced.
Israel justified the attack by saying it sought to prevent the deployment of Turkish forces at the base and the expansion of Turkey’s military presence in Syria.
Turkey rejected these justifications, describing the attack as a violation of Syria’s sovereignty amid rising tensions over Israeli activities in Syrian territory.
Damascus: There was no plan to establish a permanent Turkish base
In earlier remarks, al-Shaibani confirmed that there was no plan to establish a permanent Turkish military base at Abu al-Duhur or to deploy Turkish forces there permanently.
He said the Syrian side had informed Israel of this before the attack, but the base was nevertheless bombed.
Damascus maintains that Syria has the right to rebuild its military and civilian institutions and establish training and cooperation programs with other countries in ways that serve the country’s security and stability.
Washington criticizes the escalation
The Israeli attack also drew a reaction from the United States.
Tom Barrack, the U.S. ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria, described the attack as an “unnecessary escalation” and called for tensions in the region to be reduced.
Washington is seeking to strengthen communication channels and de-escalation mechanisms among Turkey, Syria and Israel to prevent the current tensions from turning into a direct military confrontation.
Al-Shaibani: Our priority is rebuilding Syria
Damascus stressed that it was not seeking a direct military confrontation with Israel and preferred to address disputes through political and diplomatic means.
Al-Shaibani emphasized that Syria had entered a new phase after many years of war and that its priority was rebuilding the country and achieving stability.
The Syrian government views the continuation of Israeli military operations as a threat to the stability of Syria and the entire region.
Damascus is calling for an end to Israeli attacks, respect for Syrian territory and the resolution of outstanding issues through political and diplomatic channels rather than military escalation.
