Public institutions in Iran's capital Tehran are feeling the impact of restrictions triggered by surging summer electricity demand. Mahmud Mahmudi, General Manager of the Tehran Electricity Distribution Company, told the ISNA news agency that power was cut to more than 500 public institutions that exceeded set consumption norms.
Mahmudi noted that around 4,400 public institutions operate in and around the capital, and their energy consumption is under constant monitoring. He said automatic systems cut power to institutions that exceed consumption limits.
The official stressed that restrictions will remain until consumption returns to set levels. Mahmudi advised public institutions to use alternating lighting systems, energy-saving bulbs, and automatic lighting control systems to save energy.
Mahmudi also made recommendations on air conditioner use, asking that devices be set to 25 degrees Celsius, undergo regular maintenance, and that buildings' thermal insulation be strengthened. He noted these steps could significantly reduce electricity consumption.
Mahmudi reminded that, per a Cabinet decision, on hot days public institutions must reduce consumption by at least 30% between 07:00 and 13:00 compared to the 2024 baseline, and by at least 70% after 13:00 compared to the consumption level during working hours of the same day.
He added that if the set quota is exceeded, consumption limiting systems (limiters) automatically activate and cut power to the relevant building.
