Sixteen people were killed and dozens injured in a magnitude-7 earthquake that struck Baqên County in Nagqu, in China’s Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, on Thursday night, according to the initial toll. The earthquake caused more than 300 homes to collapse.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for every effort to be made to search for missing people and provide prompt medical treatment to the injured. China’s Ministry of Emergency Management raised the national earthquake response level from Level IV to Level III on Friday and sent a working team to guide rescue and relief efforts.

The national fire and rescue force sent 350 rescue personnel and 83 vehicles to the area. It also sent 1,000 prefabricated homes, 3,239 tents, 2,821 folding beds and 4,280 quilts for those affected.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and about 183 kilometers from Nagqu. It issued a yellow alert for casualties and an orange alert for economic losses. A magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Tingri County in Shigatse, Tibet, in January 2025, killing 120 people.
