Talks between Ankara and Riyadh are continuing on an electricity corridor planned to run from Saudi Arabia through Jordan and Syria to Türkiye. The project aims to establish a new energy route between the Gulf countries and Türkiye.
Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said talks with Saudi Arabia were continuing. Bayraktar stated that Lebanon could also join the arrangement in later stages of the project.
A 500-megawatt connection through Syria
Work is under way to restore the approximately 500-megawatt Birecik-Aleppo line planned for the Türkiye-Syria section of the corridor. Türkiye has been supplying electricity to areas in northern Syria since 2017.
Preparations are also under way to deliver Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Kilis and use it to generate electricity at the natural gas power plant in Aleppo.
A line extending to Azerbaijan and Central Asia
Ufuk Alparslan, Ember’s regional lead for Türkiye and the Caucasus, said Türkiye could take on the role of a transit country connecting energy producers with consumer markets due to its location.
Alparslan said more than half of Türkiye’s electricity is generated from domestic sources, while renewable sources account for most of the capacity commissioned recently.
He said connecting the electricity systems of Türkiye and Azerbaijan via Nakhchivan, and extending the route to Central Asia through Azerbaijan, could make Türkiye an important connection point in a broader electricity system linking Europe and Central Asia.
