The US and Iran took an important step towards resuming maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the Middle East's most strategic waterways. The two countries agreed on a 60-day interim deal.
The deal is scheduled to be officially announced tomorrow. This interim arrangement aims to reopen the strait, which is vital for trade and energy flows in the region.
The agreement includes the following points:
- Vessels entering the Gulf region will use the northern route, passing through Iranian territorial waters.
- Ships leaving the Gulf for the Arabian Sea will take the southern route, moving through Omani territorial waters in coordination with Iran.
- No fees or transit taxes will be charged for transit passages during the 60-day period of the deal.
- Both sides will work together to clear naval mines from the central route of the strait, with the clearance operation targeted to be completed within 30 days.
