The Yemen army announced on Sunday evening that two of its officers had been killed in clashes with the Houthis. The army's announcement did not provide information on when or where the officers were killed.
The army-affiliated September Net website reported that a funeral ceremony for Major Harith Hassan Suma'i and Lieutenant Abdulbasit Atifa was held in Marib, in central Yemen. The report said the two officers "were martyred while defending the republic and national gains as they carried out their national duties."
Clashes spread to more areas in Yemen
Military tensions between government forces and the Houthis rose over the past 24 hours. Many people, including civilians, were killed and wounded in the clashes.
Clashes between the sides intensified again in various areas starting in early July. In addition to Marib, the northern governorate of Al Jawf and the southwestern governorates of Al Dhale and Taiz were among the areas where fighting took place.
Ceasefire in Yemen war weakened
Government forces and the Houthis have been fighting in a war that began about 12 years ago. The period of ceasefire and relative calm that had continued since April 2022 weakened after clashes resumed in early July.
The Houthis have controlled several cities and governorates, including the capital Sana'a, since September 21, 2014. The fighting continues as Yemen faces one of the world's most severe economic and humanitarian crises.
The Arab Coalition, led by Saudi Arabia, supports Yemen's government forces. Iran is accused of supporting the Houthis. The Houthis also announced in July that they had imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia.
