A fire that broke out on Monday evening in eastern Syria started on the gas pipeline between Deir ez-Zor and the Shula area. Syrian authorities said the fire was caused by sabotage.
The flames brought the transport of gas from the Jebsa Gas Facility to power plants to a halt. Hisham Salih, the Syria Petroleum Company official responsible for the gas sector, said the sections of the pipeline upstream and downstream from the fire site had been isolated.

Crews work to extinguish the flames
Salih said efforts to completely extinguish the fire were continuing after the gas pressure in the area dropped. Syrian civil defense teams were also dispatched to the area near the town of Shula to join the response.

The area between Shula and Deir ez-Zor contains facilities and pipelines related to gas production and transport. The fire broke out near the town of Shula, south of Deir ez-Zor province.
