A local health group said 27 people had been killed in two areas of Sudan’s conflict-affected South Kordofan state. The group said four children were among the dead.
The attacks were attributed to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), which is allied with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Civilians moved toward Abu Hitan and Kadugli following the incidents.
Call for humanitarian assistance for civilians
The local health group alleged that unarmed civilians had been targeted on ethnic grounds and said the attacks constituted clear violations of international humanitarian law.
The group warned that the ongoing violations risk turning the conflict in South Kordofan into a broader ethnic conflict.
The statement called on human rights organizations and the international community to pressure the SPLM-N to halt the attacks. It also called for the removal of obstacles to delivering humanitarian aid to people affected by the conflict.
The SPLM-N did not immediately respond to the statement.
Ongoing fighting in the Kordofan states
Heavy fighting has continued in Sudan’s South, North and West Kordofan states since October between the army, the RSF and the SPLM-N.
The violence has reportedly displaced tens of thousands of people. Fighting between the army and the RSF has continued in Sudan since April 2023.
Estimates by the United Nations and international organizations indicate that the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced approximately 13 million.
