Damascus will expand Syria’s air links with Europe through direct flights to Vienna and Copenhagen starting September 21. Syria Airlines will launch regular services to the capitals of Austria and Denmark.
Omar al-Hosari, head of Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, said the new routes were part of a plan to expand the country’s international flight network and strengthen air connectivity between Syria and Europe.
Two-pronged plan for international routes
Al-Hosari said the authority was pursuing two parallel efforts to develop air transport. One part of the plan involves expanding Syria Airlines’ regional and international network, while the other aims to encourage Arab and foreign airlines to operate flights to Syrian airports.
Al-Hosari said Syria Airlines’ new international destinations would be announced in the coming period. He added that new foreign airlines were expected to enter the Syrian market and that additional routes serving the country would be opened.
Germany route reopened after nearly 14 years
The announcement concerning the Vienna and Copenhagen flights came after the direct air link between Germany and Syria was restored this month. The first direct flight departing from Berlin Brandenburg Airport arrived at Damascus International Airport on August 11, after an interruption of nearly 14 years.
The service operated by German airline Sundair restored direct air travel between the capitals of Germany and Syria.
