Türkiye's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, assessed political and security developments in Syria at the UN Security Council session titled "The situation in the Middle East."
Speaking on Monday, Yıldız said Syria is moving in the right direction despite the major challenges it faces. He said some steps contributing to the normalization of conditions in Syria were positive.
Positive steps in Syria
Yıldız cited the transformation of the Syrian People's Assembly into a fully empowered legislative body as one of the positive developments. He also said the assembly unanimously approved last September a bill to abolish the Terror Court established during the Bashar al-Assad era.
Yıldız said he welcomed the Syrian government's efforts to work with international partners to achieve lasting results against ISIS and drew attention to the government's determination to cooperate with the international coalition.
Call for international support for institutions in Damascus
Emphasizing that international support must continue to strengthen the capacity of Syria's security institutions, Yıldız argued that Israel's ongoing violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity were undermining positive developments in the country.
Yıldız called for these actions to end. He called on Israel to fully comply with the 1974 agreement and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 497, and to withdraw from the occupied Syrian territory of the Golan Heights.

Yıldız said that a stable and sovereign Syria securing its borders would contribute to regional peace and economic cooperation, adding that this would also serve Israel's interests.
The Golan Heights and military activity in Syria
At the end of his speech, Yıldız emphasized that Türkiye would maintain its firm commitment to Syria's sovereignty, political unity and territorial integrity.
After the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government on December 8, 2024, Israel expanded its military activities in Syria, and Israeli forces advanced into the buffer zone in the Golan Heights and several nearby locations.

Syria is calling for Israeli forces to withdraw from the areas into which they advanced and says it remains committed to the 1974 ceasefire agreement. Israel links these moves to security concerns.
