Muhammad Abd al-Salam al-Yazuri, commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades’ Khan Younis Brigade, was killed in a strike on the al-Mawasi area west of the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis on Thursday evening, the brigades announced.
The Al-Qassam Brigades said al-Yazuri, also known as “Abu Haytham,” was a member of its General Military Council. Three Palestinians were killed and five people were wounded in the strike, which targeted a gathering of civilians, the brigades said.
Al-Yazuri’s roles in the Al-Qassam Brigades
Al-Yazuri held various command responsibilities in the Khan Younis Brigade during his military career. These included commanding the Khan Younis Battalion, overseeing brigade intelligence, commanding the weapons and services battalion, and serving as deputy brigade commander.
The Al-Qassam Brigades claimed that al-Yazuri played a significant role in planning the Oct. 7, 2023, attack and later became commander of the Khan Younis Brigade.
Israeli army statement
The Israeli army also announced that al-Yazuri was killed in a strike on the Khan Younis area. The army identified al-Yazuri as commander of the Khan Younis Brigade and alleged that he directed Al-Qassam members in preparing and carrying out plans for attacks against Israeli soldiers.
The Israeli army announced that Huzayfa Muammar, whom it identified as a company commander, and Muhammad Bahjat Radi, from Hamas’ military wing in the Khan Younis Brigade, were also killed in the same strike. The army said two Palestinians were killed in the attack.
