Algeria has ended diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates. The Algerian Foreign Ministry said that all avenues for maintaining relations between the two countries had been exhausted.
The ministry said that, before the decision was taken, Algeria had acted with restraint and responsibility while adhering to the principles governing bilateral relations. It said Algeria had previously issued warnings over actions by the United Arab Emirates that had become increasingly provocative or hostile.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry said these actions had reached an unacceptable and intolerable level for relations between two sovereign states. The ministry said this conduct had continued despite repeated warnings.
The United Arab Emirates' ambassador to Algeria was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Thursday and formally informed of the decision to sever diplomatic relations. The ambassador was given 48 hours to comply with the decision.
The United Arab Emirates' government has not yet commented on Algeria's decision.
