Rear Admiral Ali Azmai has been appointed commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy. He succeeds Ali Rıza Tengsiri, who died from severe injuries sustained in US and Israeli attacks on March 30, 2026.
The appointment was announced on Saturday, July 4, 2026. After assuming his post, Azmai issued a message describing the navy personnel as 'guardians of the strategic Strait of Hormuz'.
Military career
Born in the late 1950s in a coastal city in southern Iran, Ali Azmai spent his childhood and youth on the shores of the Persian Gulf. His mastery of the region's geography and maritime environment was decisive in his career orientation.
A graduate of the Command and Staff College, Azmai attended advanced defense courses. After serving as deputy commander of the 1st Naval District from 2006 to 2010, he was transferred to the 5th Naval District.
On November 4, 2012, he was appointed commander of the 5th Naval District, which was inaugurated with the participation of then-IRGC Commander-in-Chief Mohammad Ali Jafari. Based at the port of Bandar Lengeh in Hormozgan province, this district covers a strategic area extending from the end of Qeshm Island to the Naziat Islands region and then to the west of Kish Island.
Azmai was promoted from brigadier general to major general on March 29, 2022. The promotion was carried out upon the recommendation of the IRGC commander and the approval of the commander-in-chief of the Iranian Armed Forces. Chief of General Staff Mohammad Bagheri and many senior commanders attended the rank presentation ceremony.
At a ceremony in Bandar Abbas in May 2025, Azmai, speaking as deputy commander of the Navy, stated that after his long service in the 5th Naval District, he had moved to a senior position at headquarters.
