Axios reported, citing two people familiar with the matter, that U.S. Vice President JD Vance is leading a diplomatic effort behind the scenes to reach a new agreement with Iran. For about two weeks, he has been speaking almost daily with mediators in an effort to secure a new ceasefire and resume nuclear negotiations.
The mediators include Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir. Vance discussed holding a technical working-level meeting between Washington and Tehran in the coming days, but the meeting has not yet taken place.
According to Axios, Vance sent a message two weeks ago to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, proposing a return to direct negotiations. Iranian officials said the message created positive momentum. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are also involved in the effort, while the White House has not publicly confirmed the details.

The information emerged hours after Trump confirmed that “small” strikes had been carried out against an air defense system on Qeshm Island and said Washington had “made significant progress” with Iran. Trump also spoke by phone Friday with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and avoiding further escalation in the region.
