An Israeli strike hit a family apartment in Gaza City at dawn on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and a child trapped in the ensuing fire was rescued from inside, according to reports.
Footage from the scene shows young men entering the burning apartment through thick smoke, shouting “There are children alive... bring water,” calling for a blanket and carrying the child out of the rubble and fire.

Maryam lost her mother after her father
The rescued child was later identified as Maryam Ahmed Ghanem, about 3, and her mother, Reem Awad, was killed in the strike. Maryam had already lost her father at the start of the war. She suffered burns and serious wounds.
The strike hit an apartment in the Rimal neighborhood of western Gaza City, near Al-Shifa Hospital. Journalist Ali al-Jaafarawi, who led the young men into the flat, tried to reach the mother, but the thick smoke stopped him.
In Gaza, residents are often left to put out fires and pull out the wounded before ambulance and civil defense crews arrive.
